  I see enormous opportunities for patient empowerment flowing from a sound program of healthcare-reform and healthcare-IT-reform. New patient-centered research, educational, and communications tools come immediately to mind. I see a prominent role for the FDA here. I know that the best and brightest at the FDA very much want to upgrade its impact on all patient assistance and education.

  This comment really goes to the heart of the question of whether we are at long last going to turn things around 180 degrees and create a patient-centric healthcare system. I strongly believe that we should--MUST!

  Agreed. There a so many valuable resources that so many people just don't know about. Investing in consumer awareness and patient access to resources would be a wise call. After all consumers represent the largest untapped resource in controlling healthcare costs. Empower the consumer has historically demonstrated reduced acute care and better outcomes.
